Peter R. Gimbel
Birth: Feb. 14, 1928
Death: Jul., 1987

Underwater Explorer Photojournalist. He filmed documentaries on the great white shark and in1971, he was producer, director and underwater cameraman for the film “Blue Water, White Death”. In 1975, Universal Studios producers contracted him to shoot the underwater shark sequences for Steven Spielberg’s movie “Jaws” . He was the first diver on the Italian luxury liner Andrea Doria, twenty-eight hours after she sank on July 25, 1956. He returned five times during the next quarter century, sharing through pictures and films his fascination for the magnificent liner. His exploits included the 1981 recovery of the first class safe full of paper money, and penetration through the smokestack and motor room and out the bottom of the hull. This drive also proved the ship had sank due to an eighty-five foot gash received on impact after being struck by the Stockholm on that fateful night. His wife and dive partner Elga, died on December 7th 1994. Their ashes were placed on the Andrea Doria during one of the diving expeditions. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
