STREATOR — Elinor J. Ahearn, 87, of Streator, passed away at 7:43 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at her residence in Streator.

Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Streator.

She was born Aug. 7, 1924, at Ryburn Hospital, Ottawa, to Fred and Myrtle (Brundage) Schultz. She married Daniel J. Ahearn on Sept. 29, 1945, at St. Columba Church, Ottawa. He passed away June 5, 2009.

She is survived by sons, Joseph (Melody) Ahearn, Fort Myers, Fla., and Michael (Mary Lynn) Ahearn of Ransom; daughters, Janet (Daniel) Heider, Streator, and Carole (David) Scheuer, Blackstone; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Arlene Walsh, New Lenox, and Beverly Rardin, Fort Myers; sisters-in-law, Irene Cali, Wisconsin, Rosmary Ahearn, Ottawa, and Dorothy Schultz, Marseilles; a brother-in-law, Murry (Elsie) Ahearn, Ottawa; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Ray and Glen Schultz.

She attended Kickapoo Grade School, rural Marseilles, and graduated from Marseilles High School in 1938, where she played the trumpet with the school band. She was an avid softball and hardball player, playing catcher and pitcher.

After her graduation, she worked at the Seneca Shipyards in the office. In 1939, she went to Chicago where she lived with her Aunt Bess McIntyre and her family, and worked at the Chicago Title and Trust Company on Washington Street. After her marriage, she worked at Montgomery Ward in Ottawa.

In March 1948, they moved to a family farm seven miles west of Streator, where she helped with the farming. They were awarded a Sesquicentennial Farmer Award from the state of Illinois.

She was a member of the Annunciation Altar and Rosary Society, where she held all positions, was a lector, Eucharistic Minister, CCD teacher and choir member. She volunteered for many years with New Hope Pregnancy Center. She was a member of the Streator Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, La Salle County Farm Bureau, the La Salle County and Streatorland historical societies.

She and her husband received the St. Isidore Award from the Peoria Diocese in 2008. She also was very active with the Eagle 4-H Club, assisting her husband while he coached the boys and girls softball teams.

She enjoyed fishing, playing cards, gardening, cooking and canning, doing crafts and sewing. She especially loved getting together with her family and friends for gatherings. She made several quilts and aprons and shared them with all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
