SWAT officer kills man during hostage incident
The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch
Tuesday, May 22, 2012
A man was killed by a Columbus SWAT officer this afternoon after the man, reportedly high on bath salts, held his girlfriend hostage at a home on the Far West Side.
Sgt. Rich Weiner, spokesman for Columbus police, confirmed this evening that the dead man is Kevin Boozer, 28. He was shot about 4 p.m. and pronounced dead at the scene.
Weiner said that police were called to 5772 Chanwick Dr., near Norton and Georgesville roads, on a report that the man was high on bath salts and holding a woman – reportedly his girlfriend - against her will.
Weiner said the Chanwick Drive home is Boozer's mother's house and that Boozer was staying there. Boozer reportedly argued with his girlfriend, whose name wasn't given, then threatened her. The mother was outside at the time, police said.
The standoff went on for at least an hour before SWAT officers stormed the home. Weiner couldn't say specifically what occurred to cause the officer to shoot Boozer, but said a knife was recovered. The girlfriend had injuries that weren't life-threatening, he said, and is at Mount Carmel West hospital.
Pamela Boozer, the sister of Kevin Boozer, said her brother had a knife on him when he was shot and had been out of control because he was high on bath salts. Police said Boozer had broken out some of the windows in his mother's home during the standoff.
