Birth: Apr. 20, 1870
Lagrange County
Indiana, USA
Death: May 7, 1939
Butler County
Nebraska, USA

Parents were Samuel Stroman (1843-1921) & Catherine L. Bower (1843-1935).

In a small cabin on Apr 20, 1870 near Wolcottville, IN, a daughter, Sylvia Estella, was born to a young couple, Samuel and Catherine Bower(s) Stroman. On Mar 10, 1871 they, along with Sylvia and her older brother Charles settled on a homestead five miles southwest of Ulysses, NE. They suffered the hardships and trials of pioneering this land. After receiving title to this land the family moved into Ulysses and lived in and around the village the rest of their lives.
Sylvia met and married the the principal of the Ulysses High School, Charles (Chester) Hardy Aldrich of Ashtabula, OH on Jul 7, 1889 in Ulysses, NE.. He studied law in his spare time and was accepted into law school and they moved to David City, NE.
While in David City they had four sons that all grew up there:
George Stroman Aldrich 1/27/1892-12/6/1951
Chester Hardy Aldrich, Jr 7/16/1894-Apr 1977
John Bower Aldrich 9/24/1896-1/24/1936
Frederick Schuyler Aldrich 12/13/1899-1/24/1960.
Their first child Charles Lee Aldrich was born and died in 1890 in Ulysses, NE before moving to David City.
They lived in David City until 1911 when she became the First Lady of Nebraska upon the election of her husband to the Governorship of Nebraska. They resided in Lincoln through his term.
When Gov. Aldrich left office, he became a judge on the Nebraska Supreme Court until his death in 1924. Sylvia then moved back to Ulysses and lived with her mother, Catherine Bower Stroman until her mother died in 1936. She was very involved in social activities within the community until she suffered a severe stroke on April 12 and lingered until May 7, 1939. She was a regal lady with many friends who mourned her death.

And even though her middle name on her headstone is spelled "Estelle", all the paperwork from the family, including her obituary, list it as "Estella".

Sylvia was my Great Aunt, sister to my Grandfather Burr R. Stroman.
