John T. "J.T." Sailors, 87, Walton, passed away at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at Logansport Memorial Hospital. Born March 9, 1925, in Clymers, he was the son of the late Leo J. and Lorena E. Farrer Sailors. On Feb. 6, 1948, in Logansport, he married Marilyn Bishop, who survives.

J. T. proudly served his country in the United States Navy. In 1944, when the captain of the U.S.S. Enoree called for "sailors on deck," J. T. quickly dressed and reported to the bridge in record time. The captain was impressed at his promptness and appointed him to his security detail. J. T. served until 1946 as a gunner's mate on the U.S.S. Enoree in the Pacific Theatre, and was on the U.S.S. Missouri when the World War II peace treaty was signed.

For many years, J. T. worked as a brakeman and conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad until he was disabled in an accident. He then worked as a representative for the American Cleaning Equipment Corporation until starting his own business, American Enterprises.

A member of the Walton Christian Church, as a young man J. T. was baptized in the Wabash River near Burrows. He was a member of the Walton Masonic Lodge, the Murat Temple, the Logansport Shrine Club, and the Walton American Legion. J. T. loved helping people. His sense of humor endeared him to many friends and he was a joy to be around. He restored an old fire truck which he enjoyed driving in parades. He also enjoyed working on cars.

Surviving are two daughters, Julia (Larry) Grogg, Decatur, and Jacquelyn (Greg) Wenger, Russiaville; son, Michael (Carla) Sailors, Walton; three sisters, Mary Ann "Rooney" Downhour, Walton, Marlene "Pooch" (Charles) Remley, Walton, and Lorena Kay "Caboose" Harvey, Noblesville; one sister-in-law, Marjorie Sailors, Logansport; seven grandchildren, Michael (Jill) Grogg, Ryan (Jane) Grogg, Nathan Grogg, Devin (Justine) Sailors, Kirsten Sailors, Erica (fiance Paul Yerkes) Wenger and Olivia Wenger; four great-grandchildren, David Grogg, Andrea Grogg, Eliana Grogg and Karina Grogg; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
