Fraternity Housefather at OSU is Dead at 71
Frederick Ernest (Fritz) Gans, 71, housefather of Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity at Ohio State University for 34 years, died Saturday.
Gans and his wife, Anna, lived in the fraternity's house at 1962 Iuka Ave. He was also with the Ohio Highway Department as supervisor of Roadside parks in the Delaware area before his retirement.
A native of Dusseldorf, Germany, Gans came to the US in 1926. His family joined him here the following year.
Gans first worked in this country as a landscaper. He did the landscaping work when old Olentangy Park was converted into Olentangy Village.
Mrs. Gans went to work for the fraternity in 1930 and thereafter Mr. and Mrs. Gans were regarded as the fraternity's housefather and housemother.
Gans is also survived by a son, George (Whitey) Gans; two daughters, Mrs. Henrietta Shampton and Mrs. Anna Shaw; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and two brothers and four sisters in Germany.
Friends may call at the Rutherford funeral home, 2383 N. High St., after 2 pm Sunday. Requiem Mass will be at Holy Name Catholic Church at 9:30 am Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
