Jim Unger
Birth: Jan. 21, 1937
London
Greater London, England
Death: May 29, 2012
Vancouver
British Columbia, Canada

Cartoonist. Best remembered as the creator of the "Herman" comic strip. Born in London, he left grammar school at the age of sixteen and held such occupations as insurance salesman, advertising layout artist and police officer, in addition to serving with the British Army. After immigrating to Toronto in 1968, he landed a position as art director with the Mississauga Times and while there in 1974, he conjured from his imagination the idea for a cartoon strip based on an ordinary working man with characteristics consisting of both awkwardness and optimism, thus resulting in the unconventional "Attila The Bum", however the column was initially rejected. It was with a Missouri-based company in which Unger sold his creation and after renaming the strip to "Herman", the unconventional character reached roughly 40-million readers worldwide. During his career, he was a two-time recipient of the National Cartoon Society's Award for Best Syndicated Panel. Unger retired from cartooning in 1992. (bio by: C.S.)
