Thomas Glenwood Funk was the third of five children born to Thomas Jefferson Funk and Etta Mae Powell Funk. He was born in Fairfax, Osage Country, Oklahoma Territory before it became a state. On 13 April 1913 he and Mary Roberts Hughes sneaked away from school going across the state line to Aztec, New Mexico, lied about their age and were married. When Mary's father realized they were gone he rode by horseback as fast as he could to stop the wedding. But he arrived too late to stop it so he had Glenn thrown in jail and he spent his wedding night there. Three children were born to this union; Dorothy Estalena Funk, Lila Aileen Funk, and Gladys Marie Funk. Glenn was working as a compressor operator at the Tenbrook Mine in the La Plata Mountains when one of the charges did not go off. When he reentered the mine the charge went off throwing boulders through the air. A large rock hit him in the head as he tried to flee on 2 July 1918. He was only 23 years old at the time of his death.
