Civil War Confederate Major General. He was the oldest ex-officer of the US Army to join the Confederacy. He was a career Army officer, serving during the War of 1812 (a Captain in the Eighth U.S. Infantry), the Black Hawk War, and was a General in the War with Mexico, and was one of four generals of the line in the United States Army in 1860. He was dismissed for turning over his command and property to the state of Texas in March 1861, and became a Confederate General.
