Bill "Hickory" HERBERT – Richland,
Bill HERBERT is remembered by his family as a person who was a true family man with a great love for his wife, children and grandchildren. Bill died Sunday, May 26, 2002, of cancer after a very short illness.
Bill's life began Dec. 21, 1923, in Plainwell, a son of the late Elbert and Edna (FLEMING) HERBERT. He went on to serve his country during World War II, serving in the U.S. Army with the 93rd Mechanized Mavalry.
On Dec. 14, 1956 he married Jean BAILEY. They had known each other from school days and they would create a large blended family filled with love much like the Bill grew up in. Bill retired from the Allied Paper Mill in 1986 as a project engineer, after 38 years of service; he was a meticulous engineer and proud of his work. Bill was a member of the Northeastern Baptist Church and his baptism in 1994 was a special day in his life. He was a member of the Plainwell Otsego Masonic Lodge #78 F&AM.
Bill's family includes his wife, Jean; seven children and their spouses, Jean and Dawayne HEATH of Portage, Joan and Robert KELLEY of Sturgis, Patricia and Bob EIKMEIER, Cindy WORKMAN, William DeFOREST, all of Kalamazoo, Elbert II and Laurie HERBERT of Three Rivers, and Kay ROONEY of Kalamazoo; 14 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters, Cleo FLEMING, Hazel SAGE and George HERBERT, all of Plainwell and Charlene MUNN of Grand Rapids; and many nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Grant HERBERT, Harold FLEMING, Clare FLEMING, Luthera HERBERT, Clara PICKARD and Harley HERBERT.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel, where a Masonic service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Northeastern Baptist Church with Pastor Ray Brandon speaking. Burial will follow in the family lot in Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell.
