Victim's Body Found by Neighbor; Officers Battle Mud to Reach Scene of Tragedy West of Ottumwa.
A slide of dirt and coal in a ditch mine claimed the life of Charley Sutton, 52, a farmer, as he worked a small vein of coal on his farm, on route 4, six miles west of Ottumwa, Thursday. Exactly what time the accident occurred is not definitely known. Sutton left the home between 7:30 AM and eight o'clock Thursday, apparently to work in the mine, members of the family said. His absence was not questioned until he failed to respond to their calls at the noon hour.
Body Nearly Buried
When he did not return at 12:30 PM the family summoned Robert Pickrell, farmer neighbor, who went to the wooded gully at the rear of the Sutton barnyard and found Sutton's body, almost completely buried by the slide. Coal in the small vein crops out at a point along the rather deep gully. There it was that for some time Sutton had been mining coal for his own use, for his landlord and others, it was stated. Neighbors explained that Sutton would strip off part of the bank and then work under it to bring out the coal. Apparently while engaged in this operation, the slide caught and killed him.
