New York County (Manhattan)
New York, USA
Death: Oct. 8, 2006

Sportswriter, Author. Best known for his 41-year career as a journalist covering Philadelphia professional and collegiate sports. The son of a New York businessman, he attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and following graduation, he landed a prominent position with Sports Illustrated, with whom he earned immediate recognition nationally. One-year later (1955), he launched his lengthy association with the Philadelphia Inquirer and served as a beat reporter (advancing to editor) covering the Phillies including their painful collapse in the standings during the 1964 season. He went onto chronicle the Phillies' clinching of seven postseason berths including three National League Pennants (1980, 1983 and 1993) and their first World Championship in 1980. During the 1970s, he exposed the fictitious attendance numbers submitted by the Philadelphia Bell which led to the folding of the World Football League. On a national and international level, Dolson covered six Olympic contests and 15 Super Bowls. One of his greatest passions was his reporting on Philadelphia's Penn Relays track and field competition in which he covered 40 during his career. Dolson's capturing of the annual track meet in his descriptive columns garnered national attention to the event. After retiring from the newspaper industry in 1995, he initiated a second career when Yankees' owner George Steinbrenner hired him to serve as a scout and adviser. In 1998, he penned "Jim Bunning- Baseball and Beyond" which recounted the life and career of the Hall of Fame pitcher-turned-US Senator. Dolson lived in declining health during the last year of his life, as he suffered a heart attack in 2005 and succumbed to cancer one-year later. (bio by: C.S.)
