He graduated from Amherst College in 1840, and was a teacher in his earlier career, went on to study theology and was licensed by the Hampden Association at West Springfield in 1842, and ordained in early September 1843.
He was pastor of the Congregational Church at Ludlow September 1843-December 1859. He also served as pastor in Connecticut at Jewett City (Griswold township) May 1860-June 1870, and Westfield (Middletown township) 1877. There were other towns in Maine, Massachusetts and Connecticut where he preached or was assistant pastor.
His last residence was the home he purchased at Springfield, Massachusetts. Burial was at Ludlow Center Cemetery.
