A. O. "Dutch" Truitt, 88, of Bettendorf, died Saturday March 10, 2012 at the Illini Campus of Genesis Medical Center, Silvis, IL. Services to celebrate his life will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday March 15th, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until service time at Weerts. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery, with military honors presented by the American Legion Post #26 of Davenport.

Dutch was born in 1923 to Gladys and A. O. Truitt in Gainesville, Texas. He married Betty Jane Clemmens in 1945 in New York City. Following graduation from high school, Dutch worked at the Puget Sound Naval Yard in Washington State. He then enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He served on Destroyer Escort USS Lowe during World War II, and saw action in the Mediterranean Sea.

Following his discharge from the Coast Guard, Dutch worked for Swan Engineering Co. in Bettendorf, IA where he received his apprenticeship as a tool dye and gauge maker. He was employed in that capacity at the Rock Island Arsenal until his retirement in 1979. Dutch loved the outdoors, and was an avid fisherman.

Dutch is survived by his wife Betty, of Bettendorf; daughter Linda (Larry) Gerner of Naperville, IL; son James (Sandra) Truitt of Bettendorf; grandchildren Susan Renee Roggendorf, Christopher James Oren Truitt, Catherine (Corbin) Del Carlo, and Caroline Gerner; and great-grandchildren: Seneca Renee Bulington, Katlyn Truitt, Andrew James Oren Truitt, and Enzo Del Carlo; and sister Helen Cox of Moore, OK.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mildred, Valrie and Doris and a brother, Woodley.
