In the 1860 census, the Stewarts had 5 children, and James W. was the youngest, age 9 months. This child is not in any census after this. Relatives say he died shortly after this census, but we have no verification of a date.
This tombstone is old and weathered and hard to read. The letters "ine" can be seen. It is believed to say, "Son of J. P. and Evaline Stewart."
The known siblings of James W. Stewart were:
Emily Stewart 1850-
Fleming Richard Stewart 1852-1932
Mahala Stewart 1857-1927
Edward George Stewart 1857-1920
Wesley Stewart 1864-
Samuel Stewart 1868-1958
James Philander Stewart served in the Civil War from Indiana. Wife Evaline died in 1871 and is buried at this same cemetery. In 1873, James Philander remarried to Precia May Jones and they moved to Adair County, Missouri, where James died in 1902 and is buried there.
NOTE: James Philander Stewart also had a first wife before Evelina. She was Martha Ann McIntosh (1825-1848) who died at the birth of their first child John Q. Stewart (1848-1848) who also died. Both Martha and baby John are also buried here at Old Union Cemetery.
