Poet. Leader of the Acmeist school of Russian poetry. His output was small, collected mainly in the volumes "Stone" (1913) and "Tristia" (1922). He never embraced the Soviet regime and in 1934 he composed his notorious "Poem About Stalin", in which he referred to the dictator as a "murderer and peasant-slayer". The piece was never written down and Mandelstam would whisper it only to friends; Stalin's secret police got wind of it, however, and the poet was sentenced to two years of exile. The "Voronez Notebooks", a series of magnificent poems he wrote during his imprisonment, went unpublished for many years. Released in 1937, Madelstam was arrested again in May 1938 and disappeared without a trace. The following January his wife was informed that the poet had died in a labor camp, but the date and location given by Soviet authorities are considered unreliable.
