Rebecca Ann Furtado passed away on July 18, 2011, at 8:15 in the morning ending a 5 yr battle with cancer. It was a battle that was fought with bravery, integrity, compassion, faith, love, and an incredible sense of humor and style. Becky was a woman of many talents, strengths and abilities. She created beauty everywhere she went whether it was by her ability to decorate and create beautiful quilts, needle work, and sewing, or the beauty that you saw in her big sparkling blue eyes or the music of her laughter. Her generous spirit and heart blessed numerous people. She was a devoted, passionate teacher that loved to make learning fun and truly cared for and loved "her kids". She was a true friend and excellent listener. She never stopped trying to make a difference to the people she met. When life would knock her down her spirit and her faith would pull her back up again with determination, resiliency and compassion.
Becky was born April 9, 1961 in Floydada, Texas to Tom and Nancy Thedford. Even as a young child she was charming and outgoing and would talk to anyone she met. She moved to Stillwater, Okla., at the age of four and grew up with her baby sister, Miriam to whom she was best friend, confidant, champion sounding board and inspiration.
Becky married her high school sweetheart and true friend Mark Furtado June 25, 1983, in Stillwater, Okla. After their move to the Houston area, they were blessed with the birth of their daughter Alexis Furtado in the fall of 1992. To Lexi, Becky was the one who delighted in teaching her to read, encouraged her to try new things and develop her talents in art. Becky was one proud Mama when showing friends and family a painting her daughter had given her.
Becky was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Friendswood, Texas. She was active in Christ Care Groups and helped out at the church preschool, Tiny Treasures.
Becky is preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Thedford for whom she emulated and adored and is now reunited with in paradise; paternal grandparents, Ray Thedford, and Sara Lee Bullard; and her maternal grandparents, Ray and Annie Mae Martin.
Becky is survived by her husband, Mark; daughter, Alexis of Friendswood Texas; one sister, Miriam and dearly loved brother-in-law Bobby Boydston of Lindsay, Okla., her papa, Tom Thedford and his wife Libby Stott of Stillwater, Okla; her mother-in-law, Karen Furtado of Tecumseh, Okla; a huge family of loving Aunts, Uncles, cousins and cousin-ettes, friends too many to mention.
A Celebration of Becky's Life was conducted at Hope Lutheran Church 1804 S. Friendswood Drive, Friendswood, Texas 77546 with Pastor Ralph Hobratschk officiating on Saturday July 30, 2011, at 10 A.M. with a reception following. Another Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at First Presbyterian Church of Stillwater Okla., Saturday Aug. 6, 2011, at 2 P.M. with a reception following.
In lieu of Flowers, Memorials may be given to Tiny Treasures Preschool Scholarships in care of Hope Lutheran Church.
Condolences may be sent to the Furtado family in care of Jeter Memorial Funeral Home at www.jeterfuneralhome.com.
