Margaret W. Hayes, 84, died Saturday, May 28, 2011 at her home in Alexandria, Virginia of natural causes. She was born April 16, 1927 in Montrose, Colorado to Frank and Jean (Bertram) Walker. Her parents moved back to the Washington area while she was an infant and she lived the remainder of her life in the Arlington/Fairfax area. In Arlington, Virginia she grew up in the Walkers Chapel area, graduated from Washington and Lee High School, and married John W. Hayes on November 26, 1947 at Walkers Chapel Methodist Church. Early in their married life, they moved to the Mt. Vernon area of Fairfax County and lived in the same house for 60 years. She became a full time homemaker when their first child arrived and kept a spotless home. She fully enjoyed working in the yard and always hung her laundry out on the line. She volunteered her time with many organizations, helping with the local schools, her church, the Mt. Vernon Fire Department, National Orthopedic Hospital and others. She was a loyal Redskins fan and loved football season. She was a charter member of Heritage Presbyterian Church, located just up the road from her home and folded the Sunday bulletins for close to 40 years, as well as helping out in many other ways. She loved to sit in their beautiful backyard with her sweetheart and enjoy the birds, rabbits, squirrels, fox, and other wildlife.

She is also survived by four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation Wednesday, June 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington St., Alexandria, VA. Funeral Thursday, June 2, 11 a.m. at Heritage Presbyterian Church with burial to follow at Mt. Comfort Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Heritage Presbyterian Church, 8503 Fort Hunt Rd., Alexandria, VA 22308.
