Betty Lee Cable Samuel Redding Michelman was born in Johnstown, PA, to Benjamin and Mary Cable on Jan. 9, 1929. Brothers and sisters were Jack, Doris, Shirley, Ruthie, & William. After death of her parents, she was adopted by Harold & Betty M. Samuel of Lake Forest, IL. She is also the sister of Joel Samuel of Florida. Growing up she lived in Johnstown, Pennsylvania; Lake Forest and Chicago, Illinois; Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; and Colorado Springs, Colorado. She studied art at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, CO, for a couple of years. She was married to Leonard Richard Redding on Aug. 21, 1948, and mother to Linda, Lyda, and Deborah Redding and step-mother to Nathan James Redding. She enjoyed her life as mother and homemaker and loved to bake, garden and can her own vegetables and fruit. She enjoyed baking her own bread and baking pies and cakes for her family. She also enjoyed sewing dresses for her daughters and making clothes for her son. After Mr. Redding passed away in 1958, she married Dr. Sidney L. Michelman in 1961. He passed away in 1962 from a heart attack. Mrs. Michelman passed away in 1968 after years of battling a terminal illness and is missed today by her daughters and is still much loved. She is buried next to the Love of her Life, Dr. Michelman. She was also the much beloved daughter of Harold N. Samuel. She is also noted for her kindness to people of all stations in life and for her giving heart. She was known to take in people who were homeless or were in trouble. She also fed neighborhood children who had no food at home. Mrs. Michelman was also known for her kindness toward and love for all animals wild and domesticated. She rescued several dogs and cats and also took in crippled birds such as a pigeon, baby robins, and ducks. She nursed a family cat through distemper and hand raised baby birds. She was a flower arranger for a local florist for a brief period and volunteered as a Brownie Scout Leader. She was president of the Women's Auxilliary at the former Muskegon Osteopathic Hospital. She also assisted her late husband, Dr. Michelman, in medical emergencies at car accidient and other traumatic scenes. Mrs. Michelman was very well known for her outstanding cooking and holiday dinners of which many people shared and were enriched with her kindness, generosity and loving heart. Her home was always beautifully decorated during the Christmas holidays, which were her favorite time of year. She was well known for her talent as a dinner party hostess, and for her remarkable exquisite menus, floral arrangements, and home decorating. She enjoyed playing the piano and loved piano music. She also loved Strauss waltzes, Greek music and Latino brass scores like the Tijuana Brass. She and Dr. Michelman enjoyed many trips to New York City where they viewed Broadway hits like Annie Get Your Gun, Show Boat, Oklahoma, West Side Story, Camelot and many other shows. They once went to Las Vegas, Nevada where they watched Frank, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis and Joey Bishop in the original Rat Pack shows. Their brief time together was their own special Camelot.
