WINSTON-SALEM—Mr. Arthur James Rapp, 88, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Monday, May 21, 2012 at his home. Mr. Rapp was born on June 21, 1923 to the late Arthur George and Margaret Ann Higgins Rapp in Saint Louis, MO.

After high school, Mr. Rapp served his country as a member of the United States Army and he fought in World War II. Mr. Rapp graduated from St. Louis University with an Engineering degree and attained a Master's Degree from the University of Maryland. He retired from Western Electric/AT&T in 1983. He then founded and was President and Owner of SignGraphics, Inc. Mr. Rapp was a lifelong member of St. Leo The Great Catholic Church where he used his wonderful singing voice as a member of the choir. He was also known for the beautiful whistle he had; it sounded like a bird. Arthur had a love for all animals and a general love for nature. He had a daily passion for feeding the geese at Forsyth Memorial Park where he would visit the gravesites of his beloved wife and seven children. Mr. Rapp never met a stranger and was a calm voice of reason while facing difficult challenges in life that included early losses of his children to cystic fibrosis and his wife.

Preceding Mr. Rapp in death along with his parents are his wife of 50 years, Velma Pemberton Rapp; three sons, James, Robert, and John; four daughters, Sharon, Nancy, Christine, and Mary Ellen; and three sisters, Mary Hibbard, Marguerite Dover, and Agnes Ciaramitaro.

Surviving Mr. Rapp are two daughters, Jane Via of Winston-Salem and Carolyn Freeman(Michael) of Mocksville, NC; one son, Matthew Rapp of the home; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica, and Justin, all of Winston-Salem; one great-grandchild, Brianna; a brother, Robert Rapp(Ginger) of Lake Sherwood, MO; one sister-in-law, Doris Stock(David) of St. Charles, MO and two brothers-in-law, Bill Dover and Dom Ciaramitaro; special companions, Roscoe and Muffy; and a host of lifetime friends and close neighbors.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will follow the service at Forsyth Memorial Park with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 12:30PM until 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Friends and family are invited to a meal at 6:00 PM on Saturday at the home of Michael and Carolyn Freeman.
