Obituary (The Press and Banner and Abbeville Medium Wednesday November 5, 1879)

{{Death of Mrs. W. Joel Smith. After a lingering illness extending over many months Mrs. W. Joel Smith breathed her last at her home in Abbeville on Monday. The kind and constant solicitude of husband and friends to restore her to health by change of air and scene was all in vain. After a summer of many doubts and fears and hopes as to her health, she gradually grew worse as the cold weather approached, and died on Monday at three o'clock p.m..

The town of Abbeville has sustained a severe loss in the death of Mrs. Smith. She was beloved by all who knew her and a wide circle of friends and acquaintances will long mourn the death of one who was so endeared to them by her sweetness of manor and her kindness of heart.

It is not for us to speak of the blank her death has made in her own family. The condolling sympathy of the entire community is with her bereaved husband and children.

Her funeral took place yesterday. A large concoarse assembled at the Presbyterian Church where Rev. Jas. L. Martin preached a funeral sermon. After the services, the remains were conveyed to Long Cane Churchyard. a long procession of mourning friends following the hearse.}}

Ione lived to age 42.
