YAKIMA - Bessie Nelson, 96, passed away on September 12, 2007 at Garden Village Nursing Home in Yakima.

Bessie was born on September 23, 1910 in Frederick, Oklahoma. She was the oldest child of Effie and Daniel Wynn. Effie and Daniel had eight children; three boys and five girls. As Bessie was the oldest, it became her duty to take care of the younger children.

Bessie was preceded in death by her brothers, Lee Wynn, Jack (Orville) Wynn, and Floyd Wynn and by two sisters; Mildred Roglin and OlaFay Williams of Frederick, Okalahoma. She is survived by sisters, Dorothy Malton of Weston, CA, and Margie Campbell of Frederick, Okalahoma.

Bessie married Walter E. Nelson on January 7, 1933. They had three children; Frances Irene (Nelson) Goodman who resided in Cleveland, Tennessee. Frances passed away in March 1996; Doris Nelson who resides in Rockaway Beach, Oregon and Leonard Nelson who resides in Phoenix, Arizona.

Walter passed away on March 10, 1957 at the age of 45. Bessie had been a widow since that time.

Bessie has seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 11 great, great-grandchildren. Five grandchildren reside in Tennessee, one in Texas, and one in California.

Bessie worked at St. Elizabeth Hospital for 25 years as a cook. She retired at 65 for mandatory retirement. She sold her home in 1990 and lived at Suntower Retirement Home until October 2005. She was very active at Suntower, volunteering her time in the store, cafe, and various other activities. She also volunteered at the Salvation Army.

Bessie became a member of the First Baptist Church of Yakima in 1950 and was an active member since that date. She was involved in many church activities.

Bessie fell on October 16th and broke her hip. She spent 12 days at Memorial Hospital in Yakima before being transferred to Garden Village Nursing Home. She spent her remaining life at Garden Village.

Visitation will be offered 3 PM 7 PM, Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at Shaw & Sons Funeral Directors. The funeral will be at Shaw & Sons Funeral Directors at 10 AM, Wednesday, September 19, 2007 with Pastor Dave Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Tahoma Cemetery in Yakima.

The family wishes to thank all the staff at Garden Village for taking such tender loving care of our mother.
