Entertainer. A trailblazer, he played a significant role in breaking through the color barrier as host of his own radio programs. Born Harold Baron Jackson, he was raised in Washington, DC, his father was a tailor, both his parents had died by the time he was eight and he would go onto live with other relatives including his older sisters. He had a fondness for sports growing up and while attending Howard University, he made his initial mark on radio as the first African American sports announcer, when he broadcasted the university's baseball games and American Negro Baseball games in the Washington DC-area. In 1939 after he was first denied the opportunity to work in radio, he breached racial barriers when he purchased airtime from a radio buyer. Jackson became host of the evening interview-formatted program "The Bronze Review" at WINX in Washington and not long after, he hosted the jazz and blues program "The House That Jack Built" on WOOK. During the mid 1950s, Jackson moved to New York where he built a wider fan-base and held the distinction of hosting three separate daily radio programs on three different stations. In 1971, he collaborated with other African American businessmen to form Inner City Broadcasting which became the first African American owned and operated station in New York. He remained on the airwaves as a personality with his decade-long hosting of "Sunday Classics". He became the first African American to be inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1990 and in 1995, he was named to the Radio Hall of Fame. (bio by: C.S.)
