Professional Football Player. For nine seasons (1956 to 1964), he played at the right-halfback and cornerback positions in the National Football League with the Los Angeles Rams and Green Bay Packers. Born Urshell Jesse Whittenton, he attended Ysleta High School in El Paso and played collegiate football at the University of Texas-El Paso. Selected by Los Angeles during the 1956 NFL Draft and appeared in 112 regular season games, earning both All-Pro and Pro-Bowl honors in 1961 and Pro-Bowl status on 1963. During his years with the Packers (1958 to 1964), he established himself as a stable presence in Green Bay's backfield and was a contributor to two of Vince Lombardi's NFL Championship squads (1961 and 1962). In 1960, he produced a career-high 6 interceptions and during the 1961 season, he made a memorable play when he swiped the ball from Giants' running back Alex Webster. After retiring from football, he became co-proprietor of a country club. An avid golfer himself, Whittenton was a member of the Senior PGA Tour during the late-1980s. He was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 1976. (bio by: C.S.)
