Professional Football Player, Actor. For fifteen seasons (1955 to 1958, 1960 to 1970), he played at the punter, halfback, offensive-end, cornerback, flanker, safety and kicker positions in the National and Canadian Football Leagues with the Chicago Cardinals and Toronto Argonauts. Born David Carl Mann, he was raised in Oakland, California where he attended Castlemont High School and following graduation, he served with the US Military during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he played collegiate football at Oregon State University and was later selected by the Cardinals during the 7th round of the 1954 NFL Draft. While playing in the NFL (36 games), Mann produced impressive totals as a punter which included 2,509 yards in 1957 and a 40.4 career average. He moved onto the CFL and furthered his accomplishments as he led the league twice in receptions (1960 with 1,380 and 1961 with 659), while earning All-Star status each of those years. Following his football career, he became co-proprietor of a Toronto-based restaurant which was a favorite spot for numerous high-profile personalities including Bill Cosby. Mann and Cosby became friends which led to his casting in the TV-Movie "To All My Friends on Shore" (1972), which was written by and starred Cosby. He had further credits with an episode from the Canadian series "The Starlost" (1973) and the film "Breaking Point" (1976). He died of complications from dementia. (bio by: C.S.)
