Varmlands Lan, Sweden
|Death: ||Jan. 27, 1953|
John Westberg (then known as Jacob Persson) was born in Olme, Varmland, Sweden to Maria Nilsdotter and Per (Westberg) Anderson, who was a miller. When John was 9, his mother died. Three years later his father married Maria Larsdotter.
19 year old John emigrated from Sweden to Chicago 1884 with his 15 year old sister, Mathilda. John worked for his cousin Per August Westberg who was an established contractor. John studied at Bethany College in preparation for his work as a bookkeeper at Westberg Manufacturing Company.
For a short time, John worked at a mill in Rockford, Illinois. When he returned to Chicago he worked as an estimator for CE Peterson sash and door company. He met and in 1898 married Alma Charlotte Ahlstrom with whom he had 4 children. Bethel Church was like a second home in the family's life. John was active at both the local and synod levels.
John continued to work for CE Peterson reaching the highest level of responsibility in the company. During the Great Depression John reduced his own salary & the employees agreed to do likewise because it was the only way for the company to survive. Tragically some union organizers disagreed and strong-armed the employees into not compromising. The company collapsed.
John & Alma housed other family members and helped take of the family in other ways. They spent their last years at the Augustana Home for the Aged.
