James E. Dobbins, age 81, of Marshall, died on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at The Oaks at Northpointe Woods in Battle Creek in the loving care of his family.
Jim was born on October 15, 1929 in Marshall to Earl E. and Florence H. "Hazel" (Potts) Dobbins He graduated from Marshall High School in 1949.
In August of 1950 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Jim served on the Naval Destroyer USS Timmerman EDD828.
While serving in the Navy and stationed on the east coast he met Mary A. Foley. They fell in love and were married on January 9, 1954 in Boston, MA. Jim was honorably discharged and returned to Marshall with his new bride in June of 1954.
They raised their family here and enjoyed a loving and fruitful relationship until Mary preceded Jim in death on April 20, 2009.
Jim worked at Win Schuler Foods and their successor company Campbell Foods from 1957 until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He was active with St. Mary's Boy Scout Troop for a number of years. He was a member of Moose Lodge #676.
Jim played the trombone in the Marshall High School band. He also played with the Rudy Vogelreuter Dance band. At a band competition in Chicago the band took first place as fan favorites and second place overall!
He enjoyed fishing and traveling. He and Mary took many trips in their motor home around the country. Jim and Mary enjoyed going on cruises with family and friends. He also liked a good game of cards! Jim would enjoy trips to Baker Sanctuary with his daughters to see the cranes. He will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.
