A native of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, he was elected as a Republican to represent Massachusetts' 10th, 14th, and 15th Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives, from 1925 to 1967. From 1947 to 1949, and from 1953 to 1955 he served as Speaker of the United States House of Representative.
