The son of Sarah Dill, in 1850, he lived with his mother and siblings in Fayette Township, Juniata County. In 1860, he was a laborer living with and/or working for the William Heartline family in Thompsontown, Delaware Township, Juniata County. In 1864, he stood 5' 3" tall and had brown hair and hazel eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered at Thompsontown at the stated age of sixteen February 25 as a musician with Co. C, 77th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company December 6, 1865.

Cause of death is listed as "endocarditis" with "nephritis" a contributing factor.
