Mr. Elster Kirt "Kru" Ray, age 85 of Carthage, died Friday, July 16, 2010, at Smith County Health Care Center, Carthage. Mr. Ray was born June 23, 1925, in the Highland community of Jackson County, the son of the late Rebecca Woodside and Jeremiah Ray. Three siblings preceded him in death, Jesse Ray, Lela Fox and Ethel Davis. He was married to Clara Mai Kittrell and she preceded him in death on December 27, 2006. He was a farmer and had worked with D. T. McCall and Sons for over 50 years. Mr. Ray is survived by his five children, Vickie (Billy Wayne) Blair of Hickman, Sylvia Richmond, Kim (Bradley) Horton, Billy Ray and Sheryl Ray all of Carthage; eight grandchildren, Travis Shoemake, Lance (Jammie) Richmond, Lindsy Richmond, Mindy Horton, Shaun Horton, Sheldon Horton, Cortney Horton and Tyler Ray; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Lena Mea of Gainesboro; brother-in-Law, Wiley Davis of Lebanon. Mr. Ray's family has chosen cremation and a memorial service will be held at "The Building", Christ Church Felllowship, 3rd Avenue, Carthage, on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at 12:00 noon with Bro. Scott Nesbitt, officiating. The Ray family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the memorial service at 12 noon. Bass Funeral Homes, Carthage Chapel, directors.
