William Grant "Nick" Gump, 86, of Fairmont died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2006).

He was born Aug. 9, 1920, at Whetstone, Mannington, a son of the late Albert Loc and Eliza Dixon Gump.

Mr. Gump was a timber worker. He retired as a custodian at Converse High School in Grant County, Ind. He was an avid fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel Gump; four children, Jean Linville of Rachel, Dale Gump of Mannington, Mary Alice Coen and husband Kenneth of Jacksonburg, and Wilma Lee Christner of Rachel; grandchildren Donita Haught, Alan Gump, Tony Gump, Lori Gump, Kaitlyn Lorraine Gump, Kenneth Coen Jr., Bernadette Coen, Edward Michael, Robin Graves, Patricia Armentrout and William Michael; 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jess "Toad" Gump of Mannington and Martin "Jr." Gump of Marion, Ind.; and two sisters, Maxine Jackson of China Grove, N.C., and Ethel Varner of Fairmont.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Effie Lorraine Haught Gump, whom he married in January 1940 and who passed away on June 9, 1959; one son, Robert Grant "Bobby" Gump; two grandsons, Robert Jay Gump and Steven Wayne Michael; one brother, Bob Gump; three sisters, Ellen Blake, Doris Blumetto and Rose Linville; two sons-in-law, Mike Linville and Pete Christner; and one daughter-in-law, Sarah Gump.

Friends may call from 2-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Masters Funeral Home, 209 Main St., Mannington. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Brother Kenneth Coen officiating. Burial will follow at the Whetstone Cemetery.
