"Death of Kate Newton, the Actress"

"Mrs. Charles Backus, known on the stage as Kate Newton, died yesterday at her residence, 213 West Twelfth street. Her remains are to be interred in Greenwood Cemetery on Wednesday. Mrs. Backus was twenty-eight years old, was born in Rochester, and made her first appearance on the stage in the old Bowery Theatre when a child. She afterward supported her brother-in-law, George C. Boniface, on a starring tour. She played in most of the New York theatres and in Wallack's made a hit in Boucicault's drama ‘The Long Strike.' She joined Mr. Daly's company in the old Fifth Avenue Theatre, remaining there several seasons, meeting with success in several characters of the domestic sort; one was in the play of 'Frou Frou' in support of Miss Agnes Ethel who thus made her first step on the road to fame and fortune.
Mrs. Backus quit the Fifth Avenue Theatre two seasons ago and joined Mr. Booth's company. In supporting Mr. Boucicault in his new play of ‘Kerr' she made what was considered a hit. Her last appearance was in November 1872. A few weeks afterwards she was afflicted with hemorrhages, which recurred until her death.
She was married to George C. Davenport in 1865, and in 1868 was divorced from him and married Charles Backus, the Ethiopian comedian" (From New York Sun, Oct.13, 1873)
