Evelyn Eleanor Gjertson
Evelyn Eleanor (Smith) Gjertson, 97, died April 12, 2012, at Columbia Heights Retirement and Assisted Living Facility in Wenatchee. She was born on January 18, 1915, in Iron River, WI to Newell Bertram and Eleanor Heloise Smith. She grew up in Sandstone, MN. After a year of teacher's training, she taught grades one through three at Henriette, MN for two years. She went on to Superior State University in Superior, WI and received a degree in Primary Education. She taught second grade in Butternut, WI for two years. She married Joseph O. Gjertson on March 15, 1941, in Pine City, MN. They moved to Ogden, UT, where Joe worked as a draftsman at Hill Field Air Base and she worked at a women's clothing store. After WWII, Joe returned to his career with the U.S. Forest Service. They moved many times, living in Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Their final station was in Wenatchee, where they retired. Joe died of brain cancer in 1989. Evelyn lived independently in their home until the age of 95, when she moved to an apartment at Columbia Heights. She enjoyed reading biographies and fiction books and was a regular patron of the Wenatchee Library. She enjoyed decorating her home and flower gardening. She played the piano and accompanied church and various choirs over the years, and taught piano lessons in her home. Evelyn was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star and attended the Methodist Church in Wenatchee.
She is survived by daughters, Linda Mathison of Seattle and Julie Thomas and son-in-law, Bob of Lebanon, OR; four grandchildren, Todd Mathison of Bellevue, Brian and Gwen Mathison of Los Angeles, CA and Stewart Thomas of Portland, OR and Kristin Thomas of Lebanon, OR; sisters, Elizabeth Holznagel and Louise Lundroff, both of Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother; and her husband.
A Private Remembrance will be held by the family. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park in East Wenatchee. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society or the Wenatchee Valley Apollo Club.
