Born to Rev. Joseph Hopkins James (1848-1911) & Fredonia Winifred Caller James (1849-1884).

John served as a chaplain in France during World War I.

John married Mrs. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Leigh Wood Monette (1882-1975) on Feb. 10, 1920, in Montgomery, AL. Although he married Lizzie at age 40, this was his first marriage. One son, John Caller James, Jr. (1921–1959).
