Thomas Dekker
Birth: 1572
Death: Aug. 24, 1632

Author. His many plays and prose works show a clear-eyed sympathy for ordinary working people, best summed up by his motto: "God help the poor, the rich can shift". He himself was perpetually broke and he spent six years (1613-19) in the King's Bench Prison for debt. His most popular works were the plays "The Shoemakers' Holiday" (1599) and "The Honest Whore" (1604). (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
