For nine seasons (1982 to 1989, 1990 to 1992), he played at the left-wing position in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers and Hartford Whalers. He began his association with the sport at the age of sixteen while with the Nanaimo Clippers in 1979 and was a participant on Canada's gold medal-winning 1982 World Junior Hockey Championship Team; he contributed 4 goals with 6 assists during the series. Chosen by Buffalo during the 1st round (9th overall pick) of the 1982 NHL Draft, he made his league debut with the Sabres during the 1982-1983 season and recorded 15 goals with 12 assists. In the course of his career, Cyr was acknowledged around the NHL for his combination of talent and strength. Over the next four years, he topped the 10 goal mark including two 20-plus goals-scored years (1984-1985 with 22 and 1985-1986 with 20). While vacationing in the Dominican Republic during the 1987 off-season, Cyr was shot and wounded in an attempted robbery. He made a full recovery, however his hockey career would not see the production he had provided in seasons past. In 470 NFL games, he compiled 101 goals with 140 assists. He retired from hockey as a player in 1993, following a season with the Springfield Indians of the AHL. Cyr died from heart failure (bio by: C.S.)
