He was born on November 18, 1937 in Abingdon to Reid and A. Berneice (Chance) Hickey. He was reared and educated in Abingdon and lived his entire life there. He married Janice Truelove on April 27, 1957 at All Soul's Catholic Church in Abingdon.
David is survived by his wife, Janice; two children, Kevin (and Sue) Hickey of Galesburg and Kim (and Jim) Erlandson of Peoria; and one brother, Mick (and Lorraine) Hickey of Galesburg. He and his wife were blessed with five grandchildren, Torye (and Tom) Marek, Julie Penn (and Kris Conard), Jeff and Jennifer Erlandson, and Ryan Hickey.
He worked for the CB&Q/BNSF Railroad for 42 years as a switchman, retiring in 1997. He and his wife wintered in the Rio Grand Valley, Texas his last years.
Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am Monday, May 21, 2012 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abingdon. Father Tom Holloway will officiate. Burial will follow in the Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Sunday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel, with the praying of the Rosary at 6:45 pm.
