WOMAN DIES IN EARLY MORNING FARM HOME FIRE
Mrs. Gertrude Danielson, 67, died early Monday morning in a fire which completely destroyed her farm home 5 miles east of Bandon just off Highway 101. According to reports, she had apparently been attempting to save a strong-box when overcome by smoke.
Her husband, Chris S. Danielson, was in a state of shock following the fire and was unable to give a clear account of the tragedy. But he told the investigating State Police that he and his wife were awakened at about five o'clock by a noise in another part of the house. Apparently they had gotten out of bed to investigate the noise and became separated when they entered a smoke-filled room adjoining the bedroom.
He said he returned to the bedroom, broke out a window and climbed out. He then broke another window and attempted to enter the room he believed his wife to be trapped in, but was unable to do so as the flames pushed him back, according to reports.
The Bandon Fire Department was among those to respond to the call, but the flames were out of control by the time the truck reached the scene.
Mrs. Danielson was found in the ruins about 11:30 a.m. lying near her strong-box.
The home was totally destroyed. Origin of the fire was undetermined.
