Major League Baseball Player. Remembered for the unorthodox manner in which he found his way to the Major Leagues. For six seasons (1981 to 1983, 1989 to 1991), he was a left-handed pitcher with the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles. Hickey attended Kelly High School in Chicago, Illinois, however he did not participate in baseball. He had experience as a 16-inch softball pitcher followed by time in a semipro baseball league, prior to being discovered by the White Sox at a tryout camp in 1977. He was signed by Chicago as an amateur free agent and marked his Major League debut on April 14th, 1981, pitching in 41 games that year. In 1982, he produced a career-high in appearances with 60 and served as a situational left-handed pitcher brought in to face opposing left-handed batters. In 1983, he struggled with an elevated ERA and a lingering shoulder injury which forced him to spend the next five years in the Minor Leagues, prior to being given a second opportunity with Baltimore. In 1989, he yielded a highly-respectable 2.92 ERA in 51 appearances with the Orioles. In 231 regular season games, Hickey compiled a 9 win 14 loss record with a lifetime 3.91 ERA in 232 innings pitched. After his retirement as a player, he had an acting role playing Schoup in the 1994 film "Major League II" (1994). He worked as a used car salesman and in 2003, he returned to the White Sox to serve as a batting practice pitcher, remaining at that capacity until his death. Hickey died after being hospitalized for more than a month. (bio by: C.S.)

I remember playing with you a short time on the Markham Cardinals with my nephew Gary. As I recall, he was the one that convinced you to go to the White Sox open tryout and took you there. Now, you are playing catch with Gary in the best ballpark. RIP|
