Rev. Anselm J., O.S.B., 90, monk of St. Benedict's Abbey, Atchison, KS, died April 30, 2003 following a series of strokes. He was Professor of music in St. Benedict's College and Chairman of the music department in 1944 and from 1958 to 1971. He directed choral groups in the college and taught Gregorian chant at both St. Benedict's College and Mount St. Scholastica College, both of Atchison. For 26 years he directed the choir of Trinity Episcopal Church, Atchison. Father Llewellyn was a co-founder of the Raven Theater Guild about 1950. From 1941 to 1945 he studied music in New York City at Columbia University, Julliard School of Music, and Pius X School of Liturgical Music. Earlier he had studied at the University of Minnesota. He earned the Master of Arts in music degree at Columbia. In a second career in 1973 he joined the staff of Maur Hill Prep, Atchison, directing the school cafeteria for which he prepared through nutrition studies and kitchen management. Father Llewellyn was born September 5, 1912 in Buffalo, NY. His early education including Holy Family High School was in Tulsa, OK. He studied at St. Gregory College, Shawnee, OK and completed college education at St. Benedict's in 1937, earning a Bachelor's degree in English cum laude. The monks of the abbey will sing the Vespers for the Dead at 7 p.m., Friday, May 2 in the Abbey Church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered there Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the monastery cemetery. Besides his fellow monks, Father Anselm is survived by nieces, Rita Golm and Mary Parker of Tulsa and Lynn Dodson, Odessa, TX; and nephew John Sessing, Odessa.
