Susan was the daughter of James D. Towle and Elmira Heal. In the early 1850s, the Towle family settled in Leeds. In 1852 Susan's younger brother, 7-year-old Franklin died. He is buried in the Fish Cemetery and has a findagrave memorial. Her parents owned a house on River Road, within eyesight of this cemetery.

Both Susan's father and one brother served in the Civil War.

On October 8, 1865 Susan married Henry Augustus Brown in Leeds, who was a carpenter from Massachusetts. In 1870 a daughter Lizzie E. was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. A second daughter, Hattie L. was born in Winthrop, Maine in 1872. Then two years later twins Edwin C. and Emma were born, also in Winthrop.

Susan's mother died in 1874, and her father died in 1880. Sometime before 1880 Susan and Henry divorced. She raised her children in her parent's house, and made a living as a midwife.

Susan remarried to Horace Hadley in 1891. He made a living making and repairing shoes.

Susan's date and place of death is based on a notation in her daughter-in-law Abbie's diary. Horace died in 1908. His death record said he was a widower.

Susan's house, near this cemetery, was depicted in the early-1900s postcard to upper left.
