Samuel David Coffey Sr.
Died: Feb. 4, 2004 Sam David Coffey, Sr., 74, of Milligan Road, Afton, died Wednesday at Takoma Adventist Hospital.

He was an air-crew member (airborne radio operator) in the U.S. Air Force for more than 20 years, retiring in 1970.

Mr. Coffey flew combat missions during the Korean War and again in the Vietnam War. During the Cold war, he was involved in missions all over the world in cargo aircraft.

After retirement, he completed his bachelor of science degree in business and later completed a degree as a respiratory therapist.

Mr. Coffey was supervisor of the Respiratory Therapy Department at Veteran?s Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home when he retired the second time.

Among his numerous decorations are the Air Medal with one oak leaf cluster and the Air Force Commendation Medal.

Mr. Coffey was a member of Stone Dam United Methodist Church and was a 32nd degree Mason, having been a member of Masonic Lodge #1, F&AM, in Manila, Philippines.

He was the widower of Jonelle Moore Coffey.

He is survived by a daughter: Karen Jean Coffey of Dallas, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law: Sam David Coffey Jr. and his wife, Hazel Coffey, of Greeneville; a granddaughter: Sara Jean Coffey of Greeneville; his sister: Zona Mae Walker of Columbus, Ga; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; a daughter-in-law: Tamara Miller of Greene County; a special friend: Norma Hartman of Chuckey; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Andy and Jean Nichols of Mosheim.

He was a son of the late Grover Cleveland and Katherine (Wright) Coffey and was preceded in death by a son: Steven Moore Coffey; and two brothers: James T. Coffey and Daniel W. Coffey.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Rose Hill Funeral Home. The casket will be closed during the Saturday night visitation.

The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Bill Rines, the Rev. Roy Fowler, and the Rev. Richard Long will officiate.

Interment will follow in Bewley's Chapel Cemetery with the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard from Shaw Air Force Base conveying full military honors.

Pallbearers will be Alan Hartman, Guyman Gregg, J. Allen Broyles, Lecile Headrick, Charles Milligan, and Michael Nichols.

Honorary pallbearers will be a special doctor, Dr. James Ray McKinney, and special caregivers: the staff of Laughlin Health Care Center, Morning Pointe Assisted Living, and Takoma Adventist Hospital.
