Kathryn Scott Dornan Youngst, 74, of 812 West Main St, Monongahela died Monday, January 5, 1981 in her home after an extended illness. She was born June 27, 1906, in Chester, WV, the daughter of John M and Bessie Jane McNary Scott. She had lived in Monongahela since 1937 and had made her home with Marion Strain for the past four years. Mrs. Youngst taught in the Monongahela area school from 1949 to 1969. She lived in Burgettstown from 1913 to 1937, graduating in 1925 from Union High School as valedictorian. In 1933 she graduated magna cum laude from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Active in community and church work, Mrs. Youngst served as elder, choir director and church school teacher of the First Presbyterian Church of Monongahela. She also worked with the First Baptist Church choir in 1937. She was a member of the Golden Rule Class of the church, Order of Eastern Star, The fine Arts Club, The Valley Arts Club, the Monongahela Women's Club, the Friday Conversational Club, the National Education Association, the Pennsylvania Association, the Washington County Education Association and the Pennsylvania Music Education Association. She was a former member of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and prepared programs for the elderly in the Presbyterian Home in Washington. Mrs. Youngst was director of community arts, crafts and playground work, and was vocal music director for the Greater Monongahela High School, and various elementary grades. A pianist, she performed many concerts in the area. She was awarded superior state honors in state competition with the high school ensemble. Her husbands, Homan Dornan and Elmer Youngst, are deceased. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. James R. (Jane) Gerling, Sr. of Virginia Beach; a stepdaughter, Betty Jane McVicker of Monongahela and three grandchildren, Trisha Paige Gerling, James R. Gerling, Jr. and Allan Robert McVicker. A sister, Margaret Jane Geller and a brother Harrry M. Scott are deceased. Funeral services will be January 8 at the First Presbyterian Church, Rev. James Bailey officiating. Burial in Monongahela Cemetery. L. M. Frye Funeral Home in charge of arrangements - Valley Independent (Monessen, Pennsylvania) January 6, 1981.
