Jacob was the son of Thomas Hicks and Mary Butler.

Religion: Jacob was impressed by the earnestness of the Friends but was a staunch member of St. George's Eposcopal Church at Hempstead. Thomas Chalkey , a powerful intinerant Quaker minister, lodged with him on two visits in the neighborhood but Jacob did not become a Quaker although he did open his home to the Friends for their monthly worship. The lingering emotionalism so strongly displayed by the sect in the previous generation
disturbed him. 4
