Paternal grandparents: John George Hilts and Margaret "Peggy" Dornberger.
Maternal grandparents: Johannes "John" Frederick Helmer and Margaret Munbacher.
The Hilts and Helmers descend from the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, German Flatts Twp, Herkimer Co. (earlier, Montgomery Co.), NY families who settled in the Mohawk Valley. They were known as the "Palatines" who were forced to leave Germany for England due to their religious beliefs. From England, they were issued land grants in the Americas in the early 1700s.

He was a resident at the "New York Institution for the Instructing of the Deaf & Dumb" located in Washington Heights, Manhattan, NY Co., NY. He was born in Oneida Co., NY. There were 318 individuals listed. His name and data were on Line 258 (which was his number out of the 318). This Institution was established by charter on April 15, 1817. Have not found any record for Mason after 1855.

Note: Her sister, Melissa, b. Sep. 12, 1835. Herkimer Co., NY; d. Oct. 28, 1907, Boonville, Oneida Co., NY; she m. Job Meeker in 25 Jan. 1854 in Boonville. The 1900 census stated they had 5 children, 2 living. She died in her home in Boonville. Melissa & Job are buried in the Boonville Cem., Boonville, Oneida Co., NY; Memorial 58320998.
Note: Her sister, Mary Lovina Hilts, lived with a family named "Cobb"; she m. Lysander William Steele ca 1880.

William L. Steele is listed in an 1890 Watertown, Jefferson Co., NY Schedule Enumerating Union Veterans and Widows of Union Veterans of the Civil War. He served as a Private w/the Grand Army of the Republic in Co. I, 14 NY Artillery from Nov. 3 1863-April 28, 1964 for a total of 5 months, 25 days. Companies I and K were ordered to Fort Richmond, New York harbor, December 24, 1863, where Companies Land M joined them in January, 1864. The regiment, serving as heavy artillery and infantry, remained in New York harbor, Department of the East, until April, 1864.
Mary Lovina Hilts [Cobb] and Lysander William Steele's children:
1) William H. Steele is buried in the Dexter Cem., Dexter, Jefferson Co., NY, next to Ella E. Diefendorf in the Diefendorf family plot. He was b. 1883; he died in 1951. Mem. 83097241.

2) Cleveland H. Steele m. Ruth L. Anderson 5 July 1913 in Lyons, Wayne Co., New York. His parents are listed as Lysander Steele and Lavina Cobb [Hilts]. Her parents are Robert Anderson and Elizabeth Moos. Ruth was b. 1886. Cleveland was b. in Fulton, NY. Cleveland resided in Buffalo, NY; Ruth in Kingston, Canada. She was b. England as were her parents. Cleveland was a machinist and Ruth worked as a waitress. It was a first marriage for each.
Cleveland Hendricks Steele registered for the WWI draft on Sept. 12, 1918 in Watertown, Jefferson Co., NY. His birth date is 11 Nov. 1884, Watertown, NY. He is a machine operator for NY Air Brake Co. on Pearl St, Watertown, NY. He is married to Ruth Elizabeth Steele. He is described as tall, medium build, with gray eyes and brown hair.
There is no further info for sister Salina Hilts.
