Born in Bangor, Maine, where her actor parents were appearing in stock theater, she made her stage debut as a child. She later toured vaudeville and had notable roles in the Broadway hits "Very Good Eddie" (1915), "Leave It to Jane" (1917), and "The Night Boat" (1920).
