Halvor Haldorsen GARDEN (was Hagen in Norway; 1828-1908) and Ingeborg Knudsdtr. OPDAHL (1834-1908), emigrated from Vang, Valdres, Norway with their respective families, landing in N.Y. on July 3, 1848. They sailed on the bark Statsraad Vogt along with many other familes from Valdres.
Interestingly, they were/became Methodists in Iowa, and helped start the Washington Prairie Norwegian Methodist Episcopal Church there. The Norwegian Methodist Church is kitty-corner from the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church.
Some of Halvor and Ingeborg's 12 children moved up to northwestern Minnesota and north-central North Dakota.
One son, Edward Lorenzo Garden, became a Senator from North Dakota in the early 1900's. Their daughters; Mary and Lillie stayed in Winneshiek Co. for most of their lives (after a brief stint in Colorado). Both were school teachers in local school and neither married.
Daughter Emma married Peter BERVIG, Anna married Martin HAGEN, and Gennetta (Nettie) married Elias HOV.
