After graduation he attended a year at Oklahoma A & M College, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, before entering the United States Navy in 1951. They welcomed two sons into the family; Eric Lee and Gregory Chris. The family made their home in the states of California, Hawaii, Oklahoma, and Kansas. After Leo's discharge from the Navy the family lived in Wichita. They later moved to Hutchinson, Kansas for a time before returning to Wichita to make their permanent home.

He enjoyed spending his free time gardening, traveling, reading and taking long walks. He always liked watching the birds and working with horses. Getting to spend time with Betty and the boys as well as his large extended family was always a treat for him.
