Joseph was the son of John Haskell of Gorham, Cumberland County, Maine and Mary Ann Paine Haskell of Knox, Waldo County, Maine. Mary and John were married on 26 April 1781 in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine. Mary and John had nine children. They were: Anna Haskell was born on 23 February 1782 in Gorham, Cumberland County, Maine; John Haskell was born on 29 December 1783 in Gorham, Cumberland County, Maine; William Haskell was born on 28 April 1786 in Knox, Waldo County, Maine; Nathaniel Haskell was born on 12 June 1788 in Gorham, Cumberland County, Maine; Joseph Haskell was born on 12 November 1790 in Gorham, Cumberland County, Maine; Betsey Haskell was born on 02 June 1793 in Knox, Waldo County, Maine; Susan Haskell was born on 27 July 1795 in Knox, Waldo County, Maine; Mary Haskell was born on 24 December 1797 in Knox, Waldo County, Maine; and Jacob Haskell was born on 20 May 1802 in Gorham, Cumberland County, Maine.
Joseph married Jerusha Moors on 09 July 1815 in Otisfield, Cumberland County, Maine. Jerusha and Joseph had six children.
