Sherri Hapgood was one of my former coworkers and supervisors at The Oklahoman. She helped me get over my frustrations when sales just didn't go my way. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and moved to Mustang, Oklahoma in 1979. Besides being a loving and caring mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, she strove to be a friend to everyone she met. She was still working with us when her beloved husband, Joe, passed away from a heart attack in 2000. She quit The Oklahoman soon after her husband's passing and worked for Southwestern Bell. Then, in 2001, she was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Her odds of survival were less than 50%. A doctor at Mercy Health Center, however, managed to treat her with chemotherapy, sending the cancer into remission. Sherri survived the treatment, and the doctor called her his "miracle patient." Sadly, the cancer recurred a few years later, and Sherri passed away on June 12, 2004. She was a brave fighter and an inspiration to other cancer patients.
